Making the announcement on Major League Baseball (MLB) Network, the Baseball Writers Association of America honored Washington Nationals Max Scherzer as the 2016 National League Cy Young Award winner. This is the second time the right-handed pitcher received the recognition; he won it three years ago in the American League.

Becoming only the sixth pitcher in MLB history to receive the honor in both leagues, Scherzer joins an exclusive group including Roy Halladay, Roger Clemens, and Hall of Famers Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, and Gaylord Perry. Scherzer is the first player in Washington Nationals present-day history to receive MLB’s top pitching honor and only the second pitcher in franchise (Nationals and Expos) history.

As a four time All-Star, the Nationals pitcher gathered 192 points during the balloting process, 25 of which were first place votes. Scherzer finished 90 points ahead of second place recipient Jon Lester of the 2017 World Champion Chicago Cubs.
